Orange Juice

On October 20th the New Economics Foundation held Interdependence Day at the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), in London. The day highlighted our growing global interdependency for materials and services, and the impact that this is having upon the planet.

Recycled Venues were commissioned to design and build a structure which demonstrated this. From this broad remit we developed a brief to work from and settled upon examining the properties of an orange juice carton.

The final piece is site specific, playing off the modern pavilion which serves as a new entrance and exhibition space to the traditional Victorian building. Visitors entering see a series of frames, scaling down in size.

Each of the 5 frames represents one of the 5 materials inherent in an orange juice carton, and contains information on the environmental impact of the extraction, procesing and delivery of the product.

Our first and largest frame, measuring 3m by 3m, represents the external print layer, the 2nd, plastic coating, the 3rd describes the wood pulp used for card, 4th the aluminium foil used to preserve the product and finally orange juice in the carton which can be harvested, processed and delivered in a variety of ways.

Our feedback shows that the final design engaged with our audience and effectively communicated the message.
